As the new head coach of Liverpool FC, Andoni Iraola is diving headfirst into the pre-season program, eager to imprint his style on the team. In an exclusive interview with Liverpoolfc.com, Iraola shared his thoughts on the early stages of his coaching journey.
The Early Days of Coaching
Iraola, who took his first on-pitch session as Reds head coach on Thursday, has been working with the U21s for almost two weeks. He expressed his eagerness to start training properly, emphasizing the importance of implementing his style from the beginning. "It has been a good day," he said, "I was looking forward to starting the training properly."
Implementing Style and Player Understanding
When asked about the process of implementing his style, Iraola explained that it involves understanding the players' needs and preferences. "We need them to understand what we need, to implement what we want," he said. "We also have to learn a lot from them."
He further elaborated on the importance of spending time on the pitch working with the ball, as it allows for better understanding of the players' strengths and weaknesses. "The more we can spend time here on the pitch and working with the ball is going to be better for us," he added.
Player Fitness and Injuries
Iraola noted that the players have been professional and well-prepared for the pre-season. "Nowadays, players normally are very professional," he said. "They have things to do in the summer. They come normally in a good shape."
However, he also acknowledged the presence of injured players, including Jayden Danns, Stefan Bajcetic, and Wataru Endo. "We have, I would say, five players injured," he revealed. "Even [Jayden] Danns, who couldn't start with us because he got injured with the U21s."
Iraola provided an update on the injured players' progress, mentioning that three of them have long-term injuries, while Stefan Bajcetic is slowly improving but not yet ready to train with the team. He also mentioned Wataru Endo's situation, indicating that his recovery is part of the ongoing process.
